What S'pore needs: People with stroke of genius
Education Minister said: 'We need the same people who launched eBay, Google, and Facebook. It is not high averages that got you these innovations. If you couple episodic peaks with a high base rate, then you can move.'
Yes, will singapore produce companies of such standards? I believe Creative has done well to meet that mark... but competition in the CE area is just so competitive... that the moment you stop to catch a breath, you find yourself being overtaken by others. Which other company in Singapore has made that mark? But at the same time, Singapore has a lot of really good services which are not promoted globally, similar to the situation in Japan. If the US can do it, why can't the people in Sg? It's perhaps not that stroke of genius that Singaporeans need, but the stroke of courage to fail that Singapore's culture needs. People in US probably has failed thousands of times more than those in Sg. What we see are mere products of the successes of such trials. And of course, every country has their own share of geniuses. If there're 100 times more people in US, perhaps it's also reasonable to assume that there's 100 times more geniuses in US than in Sg. So one may ask, how can a company in the little red dot compete with its competitor in the land that holds the world's greatest economy? In this age of globalization where boundaries are blurred, we just have to compete with them on equal grounds, that is, on their own land and beyond. |
