Exactly 12 have passed since Grandma's passing. Live, Age, Ill, Death. It was one of a kind experience... the first time someone so close has left my side, someone whose memories go way back to my childhood days. Yes, there was my maternal grandma's passing, but that wasn't as heart wrenching as this as the funeral was held back in Penang. Being older and less ignorant of matters now, emotions become more varied and transparent.
It was so similar to taiwan dramas. Vivid memories ranging over 20 years back from childhood to the present day returned as she was being sent from my uncle's place in AMK back to my place and then finally over to Mandai Crematory. I could still remember how she used to play cards with me, how she used to come to sch to find me when i stayed back to play bball, the way she looked at me, the way she talked to me, the way she cared for me whenever I was sick, the way she tried to get me to z when my bros and i stayed up late to play, the times she brought me out, the times when she treated me to goodies, the times when I brought back goodies for her, the times we watched TV together, the joyous moments of Chinese New Year, how she protected and consoled me from then-fierce Daddy, those weekly phone calls from US when we talked about everything including my future soulmate's 'requirements'... Yet, for the last 5 years, I was never really with her by her side. I never really spent a real Chinese New Year with her. I thought I had time, and I was wrong. The chinese new year 5 years ago, was the last Chinese New Year I really had with her, when I wished her longevity and received her blessings.
Now she's no longer around. The next Chinese New Year will have one person less, one most important person in the family. Oh well, such is life. I can't imagine myself getting old, getting sick, and gradually dying away. Neither can I decide which is better: sudden or gradual death. Suddenly, I'm afraid to die.
I guess, such event is one of the reasons I didn't really feel like meeting people when I return this time. I guess I only met those who wanted to meet me. I just want to spend time with my parents who're getting old. A friend just reminded me that they're already over 60... How many more years do I get to swim with them in the swimming pool? Cherish thy loved ones before time runs out.
