Cutting on Scholarships???
Sure, it's an "in" thing these days. And pretty wasted too. That would only mean less people will be able to further their studies abroad, and that more Singaporeans will be more narrow in their thinking. But then again, if one is really that clever and determined, he can still get scholarships/financial aid from a foreign college. While few people will be driven enough to do that, those who really do it will eventually be the ones who'll drive Singapore forward. Moreover, even if one has to take one's undergrad in a local uni, one can still turn abroad for one's grad. Many grad studies, esp Engineering and the Sciences, can be taken free in many colleges, esp in the US. In fact, some college may even pay you to come. So, it really doesn't the end of the world if DBS, PSA and PSC are cutting down on their yearly scholarships or posing more restrictions on them.
But it's really interesting to speculate the day when even PSC stops giving out any scholarships. What then is termed as a prestigious scholarship??? Perhaps, the best and brightest of our kids in future will enjoy the greatest prestige when they got a nice teaching scholarship from MOE. Can you imagine the invaluable prestige our next Presidential Scholar will enjoy? Oh WOW, he is the one who holds 2 scholarships, a President Scholarship and an MOE teaching Scholarship! Yay!!!
Oh well, anyway, it's really a great experience and my greatest fortune to be able to study abroad, far away from your comfort zone. Thank you daddy!!!
